5 question about using ear plugs

Author: EarPros team

Today four basic types of hearing protection.

  1. The most common are the disposable foam earplugs. These earplugs are comfortable, but they do not offer the maximum protection in noisy conditions. They fit multiple ear canals and can be disposed of after use.
  2. Reusable earplugs - these plugs are pre-formed for the ear canal, washable, and made for multiple uses. They are as effective as the foam earplug but can be used multiple times.
  3. Earmuffs - Earmuffs go completely over the ears. they fit everyone; one major downside is that they usually have a lower rating because they do not seal the ear canal.
  4. Custom Earplugs - Custom earplugs are molded to fit your ears exactly. They are designed to provide effective protection for different situations, such as swimming, hunting, or in the workplace. These type of earplugs can last several years. Because they are made using a mold of your specific ear canal, they create a perfect seal to prevent noise or water damage. These require the assistance of a hearing care professional to make an impression of your ear canal.

How to put in ear plugs?

  • Foam earplugs -roll the entire plug into a long cylinder shape.  pull your ear up and back to open your canal for the plug. Insert the plug and hold for about 20 seconds to allow it to expand and fill your canal.
  • Reusable earplugs - Pull your outer ear up and back. This opens up the canal to properly insert the plug. While holding the stem end of the plug, insert it inside your ear canal until you feel it seal in place. Make sure they feel comfortable.
  • Earmuffs - Adjust the cups on the earmuffs so that the headband fits comfortably over your head. Ensure the cushions of the muffs form as tight a seal as possible over your ears.
  • Custom earplugs - Since each plug is custom-made to fit your individual ear, the hearing care professional will instruct you on the proper insertion and removal of the earplugs.

How to use ear plugs?

Noise induced hearing loss is the only preventable type of hearing loss. Once you lose your hearing from exposure to loud sound, your hearing will not recover. The best tip for earplug usage is to always wear them when you are going to be exposed to loud noise. This can be in the workplace, outdoor activities such as lawn mowing, use of power tools or going to concerts.

How to clean ear plugs?

  • Foam earplugs – these are disposable and are designed for single usage and then discarded.
  • Reusable earplugs – can be cleaned with warm soapy water or cleaned using alcohol wipes. These must be kept clean to avoid infection.
  • Earmuffs – clean with alcohol wipes to avoid infection. Alcohol or cleaning materials may after an extended time cause the earpads to deteriorate so check and replace the earpads as needed.
  • Custom earmolds – can be cleaned with a number of substances. Your hearing care professional will inform you on what they recommend. It is important to clean these after each use to avoid infection.

Can you sleep with ear plugs?

Earplugs are generally safe to use while sleeping.  It is possible that after extended use it could lead to wax build-up or possible external ear irritation. Earplugs can significantly reduce the amount of sound entering the ears, which may help people get to sleep in noisy environments. When compared with other methods of inducing sleep such as sleeping pills, earplugs have fewer side effects.
