FAQs

Does your insurance cover hearing aids?

Hearing aid coverage in Australia depends on your health insurance plan. While Medicare generally does not cover hearing aids, private health insurance may offer partial coverage. It's important to check with your provider to understand the specifics of your policy, including coverage for hearing aids, tests, or repairs.

Additionally, eligible Australians, such as pensioners and veterans, can access government support through the Hearing Services Program. Make sure to explore all options to ease the cost of hearing aids.

Where can you get your hearing tested?

You can book a hearing test at various locations in Australia, including:

  • Hearing clinics: Many local hearing clinics offer hearing tests.
  • Audiologists: You can schedule an appointment with a licensed audiologist at hospitals or independent practices.
  • GP referral: Your general practitioner (GP) can refer you to a hearing specialist for a test.
  • Online booking: Many providers offer online booking for free hearing tests via their websites.

Some clinics and providers offer free hearing tests for eligible Australians, especially through the government’s Hearing Services Program.

Be sure to check if the provider is part of the Hearing Services Program for eligible government-funded service.

What are the 3 types of hearing loss?

There are three main types of hearing loss:

  • Conductive hearing loss: This occurs when sound waves are unable to reach the inner ear due to issues in the outer or middle ear, such as earwax buildup, fluid, or infections. It is often temporary and can be treated medically or surgically.
  • Sensorineural hearing loss: This type involves damage to the inner ear or the auditory nerve, making it difficult to hear soft sounds and causing a reduction in sound clarity. It is usually permanent and commonly treated with hearing aids or cochlear implants.
  • Mixed hearing loss: A combination of both conductive and sensorineural hearing loss, where both the outer/middle ear and inner ear are affected. Treatment often addresses both the conductive and sensorineural components.

Each type of hearing loss requires specific approaches for management and treatment.
